About This Artwork

This work was painted for an installation to accompany the showing of the "000235" series when it was included in the exhibition, "Htein Lin: Burma Inside Out", at the Asia House Gallery in London in 2007. Gloomy Room depicts, in Htein Lin's characteristic linear figuration, prisoners staying cramped together in multi-occupancy cells. The work was painted with the same mono print technique using scrap materials such as pieces of plastic and the backs of plates that the artist developed while painting in jail without brushes.
