About the Exhibition

Kalaw's Beauty, My Lifetime Journey

There's something quietly certain in Sai Thet Htwe's work. Sai Thet Htwe lives and paints mostly in Kalaw. His rhythm is different - local, grounded, seasonal. And that feels right for us. Sai Thet Htwe was born in 1965 in Taunggyi, Southern Shan State. He began painting during his childhood and studied art in summer classes under the guidance of U Tin Win, his first and only mentor. Working primarily in oil, Sai Thet Htwe is best known for his expressive landscapes, particularly his paintings of clouds. For him, clouds symbolize freedom - constantly moving, never confined. Every cloud he paints is based on photographs he takes himself. He often travels in search of the perfect sky, sometimes waking before dawn or sleeping in his car for days. These quiet journeys reflect his deep dedication to his work and his desire to share the beauty he encounters with others. In 2001, he married and moved to Yangon, where he paused his artistic practice while working in car maintenance. After nearly a decade away from painting, he returned to the canvas with renewed energy and focus. He now lives and works in Kalaw. His works go beyond landscape; they hold emotion, memory, and the quiet observations of someone who finds meaning in light, sky, and the world around him. His clouds are never just clouds. They carry stories, memory, even distance.
